General Statement of Policy

It is the anticipation of the IB that all work presented is the students’ own work.  Marmara Private High School places a high value on academic honesty and all student products are subject to turn-it-in check to detect any plagiarism.

Marmara Private High School’s honor policy

Students are anticipated to maintain personal and intellectual honesty and integrity at all times. Intellectual honesty is a vital part of the National Curriculum and International Baccalaureate programs. All kinds of exams and assignments e.g. MCQ, written and oral exams, TOK essays, language written tasks, commentaries, laboratory reports (write-ups), practical schemes of works, group 4 and SBS TITC  projects, extended essays are to be the original material or work of the student himself/herself.

Consequences for academic malpractice

Students who violate the intellectual honesty are subject to the sanctions of IBO Diploma Programme General Regulations as well as Awards and Discipline Regulations For Secondary Education Schools (Official Gazette # 22188 Jan. 31, 1995) and Ministry of National Education Pass, Fail and Examination Regulations (8 December, 2004/25664).

Copyright and Intellectual Property Policy

Copyright and Intellectual Property rights of individuals and third parties are protected by the Laws of Republic of Turkey. Marmara Private High School observes and obeys the rules and policy for the use of the Intellectual Property of the IBO.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISM

Sanctions of Awards and Discipline Regulations for Secondary Education Schools:

All students are informed about examinations, project rules and methods at the beginning of the academic year. It is important take actions immediately for cheating and plagiarism. If a student is seen cheating in an exam or if there is plagiarism on his/her homework, the teacher should submit the detailed written report to the relevant assistant principal and the department head immediately.

The exam paper of the student who is seen cheating must be immediately taken; it should be ensured that the student stands in silence during the exam, or the student should be sent to the relevant assistant principal's office. Within the knowledge of the Assistant Principal, the student score in the exam or project is considered to be zero. In case of second trial/attempt, the student score in exam or project score will be recorded to be zero and the case will be referred to the disciplinary board. The consistent application of heating and plagiarism penalties shall establish a precedent for all students.

Students’ Responsibilities:

  • To maintain and support the academic integrity of the school community by completing all work, activities and exams given, without cheating, falsifying and plagiarizing, in accordance with the stated process and according to the specific policies
  • To understand the School's Honour Policy and each teacher's assignment method
  • To clarify any ambiguity about assignment that may violate the Word of Honour by asking a teacher
  • Preventing improper use of their own works

Teachers’ Responsibilities:

  • To maintain and support the academic integrity of the school community
  • To clearly explain the School's Honour Policy and the specific assignment manual given by the teacher together with the curriculum
  • To maintain the integrity of exam process
  • To explain how to use the supplementary sources that are allowed to be used
  • To report any violation of Word of Honour to the department head and relevant assistant principal
  • To student papers for plagiarism by using turnitin.com mentioned below,
  • To report the students violating the Word of Honour to the relevant assistant principal

Administrators’ Responsibilities:

  • To maintain and support the academic integrity of the school community,
  • To ensure that the school’s Word of Honour is printed and distributed to all students, teachers and parents
  • To record the violation of the Word of Honour
  • To act fair in the violation of the Word of Honour.

Parents’ Responsibilities:

  • To support the academic integrity of the school community
  • To have knowledge about the school’s Word of Honour
  • To notify the students that they are expected to follow the Word of Honour
  • To support the action including the penalties given to the students in case of the violation of the Word of Honour.

Students’ Right:
If it is suspected plagiarism, it shall be come to the common grounds with students:

  • Confidentiality
  • It shall be referred to the Word of Honour by teachers, administrators, advisors and –in some cases- disciplinary committee.

Turnitin

To control increasing plagiarism tendency due to electronic communication, Marmara Private High School students and staff use "turnitin.com" service network. Thanks to this service, students’ papers and projects are compared on a large database.

The procedures to be followed are as follows:

  • Teachers use their own resources and the "turnitin.com" to check for any plagiarism in student assignments. Teachers demonstrate samples of appropriate use of resources to help students. During turnitin.com check, assignments are compared to other assignments in the database, on the internet and in other sources. All submitted assignments will then become the part of "turnitin.com" database.
  • Students and parents agree that all submitted assignments will be added to the "turnitin.com" database to prevent plagiarism.
