IB Diploma Programme Model

IB Diploma Programme students must choose one subject from each of six groups. At least three and not more than four subjects are taken at higher lever, while the others are taken at standard level. The ideal combination would be of three high level and three standard level subjects. The Extended Essay, CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) and TOK (Theory of Knowledge are the programme’s three core elements. During the two years of the Diploma Programme, high level courses need to be completed in a minimum of 240 hours, whereas standard level ones at 150 hours (One IB lesson hour comprises of 60 minutes). An IB Diploma candidate must choose one subject of each offered in the six groups.

GROUP 1

STUDIES IN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Language A: It is a course given in the mother tongue. Turkish Language and Literature studies are taught. This subject may be taken by the students at a standard or higher level. The instruction focuses mainly on literature.

In our school, this subject is taught in Turkish.

Turkish A1 is a literature course designed to meet the needs of students ’mother tongue. Students in international programmes have to complete Turkish language courses in order to meet national curriculum requirements of the Ministry of National Education.

GROUP 2 

LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Language B: Language B is a foreign language learning course designed for students with some previous experience of the language. English B is taught at high level in our school. English B is a foreign language course designed for students with a minimum of 2 years of previous experience in the language and who have achieved a reasonable level in that time. The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and development in the four primary language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

GROUP 3

INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETIES

Under this group, subjects such as Economy, Psychology, Business and Management, Geography, History Information Technology in a Global Society are available for study. Subjects may be taught at a standard or higher level. In our school, the Group subject is Turkish Social Studies (School Based Syllabus). This course provides students with an in-depth thematic study of the three separate subjects; History, Geography and Sociology courses set by the Turkish National Education for Years 11 and 12 as a single course under the name of Social Sciences. Teaching and examination is done in Turkish. Psychology (HL) and (SL) are also offered as part of Group 3 subjects from group 6 as optional courses.

GROUP 4

EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES

Subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design technology and Environmental Systems and Societies are available. Subjects may be studied at a standard or higher level. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are the sub-jects offered in our school.

GROUP 5

MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

This group includes mathematical subjects at a standard and higher level. Both levels are taught at our school.

GROUP 6

THE ARTS

It is a requirement of the programme that students choose one subject from each of the groups 1 – 5. Alongside these five courses, a student can choose to study a group 6 subjects or an additional subject from groups 1 – 5, such as Information Technology in a Global Society, Psychology, Philosophy etc.
