The Excellent “Grease” Performance by the English Drama Club

English Drama Club’s unique performance of the “Grease” musical was greatly appreciated. Zeynep Akın, Azra Deniz Kasırga, Melis Duru Sönmez, Sevgi Alkanlı, Sinan Abacıoğlu, Selin Yalçın, Duru Çakır, Zeynep Ezgi Alptekin, Ziya Kaan Gül, Efe Divrengi and Rotary programme exchange student Rafael Henrique as well as cheerleaders took place in the musical. English Teacher Elif Özbaykan and French Teacher Dilara Türeli were the advisors of the musical. Students’ beautiful intonations, fluent speaking and their successful acting caught attention. 

The musical reflects the youth spirit of the 70s and lasts about an hour and a half. The teachers and students gave a colorful break from the intensive tempo of the end-term exams with this musical.

The Grease musical was named after the “Greasers”, which was the American youth culture in the 50s. It was first staged in Eden Theatre, New York, on February 14, 1972. Grease has become the musical that was staged the most times in Broadway in 1978, and was adapted for the silver screen in 1987.  It is still the musical that was staged the most times in Broadway history. The musical brings love, youth, music and friendship of the 50s with a great choreography and musical richness to the stage. In the unforgettable movie adaptation in 1978, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John costarred and since then Grease has become a pop icon with never-decreasing popularity. 

GREASE musical, which had great effects on the fashion trends of its time, has been staged in 26 countries from Europe to Far East, its sequels were written and its soundtracks and DVDs sold millions.
