The project started in 2013-2014 academic year in Marmara Educational Institutions on a volunteer basis continues under the roof of “Best Buddies Club” that is leaded by the History teachers Melek Ekşi and Damla Uluöz Memiş in 2016-2017 academic year.

Best Buddies social responsibility project that operates in 52 countries aims establishing mutual friendship on equal footing between individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and volunteers. The non-governmental and non-profit organization has an international structure with 950.000 volunteers.  Anthony Kennedy Shriver, the founder and the nephew of John F. Kennedy, one of the presidents of USA initiated the project in USA Georgetown University in 1989. Best Buddies Turkey has operated since 2010 under the supervision of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and under the roof of Alternatif Yaşam Derneği (AYDER).

"Best Buddies Turkey" programme coordinator Fidan KARAAHMETOĞLU came to the school and gave an introductory presentation; so the first steps were taken for the Marmarian volunteers. In the second step, "Leadership Training" will be held under the leadership of Sercan DUYGAN. In the third step, training on "Approach towards Disabled Person" will be given.
