Best buddies turkey programme coordinator selim eraydin visited our school on tuesday, 2nd december 2014 to make an introductive presentation about the programme. Thusvolunteers of marmara took their fist steps for the programme.
Best Buddies which is turns its fifth age this year with its branch offices operating in 52 countries aims at helping mentally retarded individuals in establishing mutual bonds of friendship with non-disabled individuals on equal footing. The nongovernmental and nonprofit organization has an international structure with its 800.000 volunteers from all pver the world. Former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s nephew Anthony Kennedy Shriver commenced the project at Georgetown University in 1989 as its founder. Best Buddies has been active in Turkey since 2010 under the supervision of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and under the umbrella of Alternative Life Foundation (AYDER). At the project that has been attended by 100 parents from 10 schools in 4 years more than 300 friendships have been established. Prime-Time Newcaster Gözde Atasoy supports the Turkey branch of the project as Friendship Envoy, a status adopted by world-famous figures like Cindy Crawford and Romero Britto. Friend-matchings are done following face to face meetings done with all volunteers. There are currently 1.000 people registered in the volunteer list of the foundation.
